13-14 October, 2023

Organized by

Department of Commerce, Assam Don Bosco University

Background:

The Republic of India, ever since Independence has been awakened to rediscover its old glory and prosperity of human civilization. In order to mark the completion of 75 years of Independence from British Dominance, the Government of India has initiated ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ on 12th March, 2021 and will end on 15th August, 2023. The Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’  is not only a moment of celebration of a significant milestone in India’s history but also aims to commemorate the sacrifices made by freedom fighters to inspire future generations to work together towards building a new India with a broader vision.

The India 2.0 vision is to become ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ through initiatives such as Skill India, Digital India, Start up India and, Make in India that aims to foster a culture of innovation, entrepreneurship and technology transformation keeping in mind a path that ensures social inclusion, environment protection and good governance. India has been the 5th largest economy in the world by nominal Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of close to US$ 3 trillion since 2019 when it overtook the United Kingdom. The Reserve Bank of India bulletin (January, 2023) has projected that India will become a US$ 3.7 trillion economy in 2023 and will continue to maintain its lead on the United Kingdom. As per the International Monetary Fund (IMF) World Economic Outlook Database (October, 2022), India may overtake Germany and Japan to become third biggest economy by FY2028. The day is not far to reach the goal of US$ 5 trillion economy as envisioned by the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India Shri Narendra Modi.

In its endeavor to promote sustainable economic growth and development, it is equally important to recognize social inclusion and ensure social justice to the deprived sections in its vision 2.0 on priority basis. India is a diverse country with a large population and a complex social structure, resulting into disparities in terms of income, education, health and access to basic services. To address these disparities and promote social inclusion the Government of India has implemented several policies and programmes over the years. Some of the flagship schemes for the deprived sections are Jan Dhan Yojana, Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana, Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana, and Ayushman Bharat. As far as the initiatives towards protecting our environment is concerned, India is making significant investments in renewable energy, clean and green technologies and sustainable agriculture to reduce carbon footprint and promote sustainable growth.

At this juncture, it is important to understand that this is just the beginning of a new India. Focus now is to be made on its many opportunities to respond to the growing aspirations and needs of a new India keeping in mind the priorities, perspectives and challenges that lie ahead. Academic discussions to delve into priorities and perspectives for India 2.0 and its way forward is therefore, the need of the hour. The Seminar aims to provide a platform for diverse perspectives to be shared leading to new ideas, solutions so that a path towards a more inclusive, sustainable and prosperous future for India can be built.
